Devonport Cup 2017

Devonport Cup Day is a local holiday for the Municipal area of Devonport. It is not a full public holiday but rather a local public service employee holiday as well as for those whose awards and private employer agreements allow.

Now regarded as one of the three major summer cups, the Devonport Cup, which dates back over a 100 years, precedes the Hobart and Launceston Cups and its distance of 1800m makes it a perfect lead-up to the other races. Prize money now of $100,000 attracts a high quality field.

Almost every year crowd records are broken as people from all over Tasmania flock to Devonport to enjoy the combination of racing and fashion that can only be Cup day. Tickets are available from the club and selected venues around Devonport and vary in price from picnicking on the grass, to seating, to access to exclusive areas.

The event is held on the second Wednesday of January and everyone from the fancy dressed to the high-rolling businesspeople enjoys the hype and interaction at the Devonport Racing Club. Many businesses use it as an opportunity to wine and dine corporate contacts and often host their own marquee with food, champagne and networking.

Apart from the competition on the track there are also several eagerly sought after awards on the lawn, including fashions on the field. Race goers can enter the Fashions on the Field competition where prizes are given in different age groups for the best-dressed man, woman and couple, plus an overall winner.

While Cup day gives many a chance to dress up in their finest, the relaxed country atmosphere at Devonport, gives people from all walks of life the chance to enjoy racing at its best whether it be with a beer or champagne in their hand.
