2018 4 Jun Mon Western Australia Day Western Australia

Western Australia Day is held on the first Monday in June each year and is a state holiday only in Western Australia. It commemorates the founding of the Swan River Colony near Perth by European settlers in 1829.

The public holiday was celebrated as Foundation Day until 2012, when it was renamed Western Australia Day as part of a series of changes to recognise the Aboriginal people as the original owners of the land

Events on the weekend of the public holiday include the WA Day Plate, a horse-racing event on the Saturday at Belmont Park; the WA Citizen of the Year Award for categories like Youth, Community, Business, Arts etc; a breakfast hosted by the Governor of Western Australia for competition winners; other activities celebrate modern communities and the lives of the early white settlers and those of Indigenous Australians.
